Black Loyalists were slaves that devoted themselves to the British Colonial forces during the American Revolutionary War. They joined the forces due to the Crowns promise of giving them freedom. There were 1200-2000 Black Loyalists who made their way to the Maritimes. The typical experience for each Black Loyalist that came was not freedom but more so slavery, re-enslavement, and other brutal forms. What Black Loyalists focused on more so than anything else was their struggle towards autonomy, and closely examining the development of the black identity in Nova Scotia as well as Sierra Leone.
